Which is known as Prison Island, was uninhabited until 1860, when the Arabs lived there. Slaves who were considered rebellious or likely to lead rebellions were kept there before and being sold abroad. 

Those who contracted yellow fever were quarantined there during epidemics. When Zanzibar became a British protectorate, the Arabs sold the island to the British, and a prison was constructed. The prison was never used after its completion, and it has now been converted into a luxurious hotel.
